Diane Cornelius brings the joy of weddings to Haiti

In a medical clinic in Haiti, 19 wedding dresses hang from shelves and IV poles. Diane Cornelius, a bridal store owner from Lexington, Ky., is helping to outfit brides for two group weddings to be held that week.

The clinic is on the grounds of Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, a non-profit that serves one of the poorest regions in the country. Outside the mission gates in Saint-Louis-du-Nord, the roads are unpaved, electricity is scarce, and running water is a luxury. Jobs are rare, and many people earn less than $1 a day.

Rolande Etienne's groom was a barber before a road accident left him unable to stand for long periods of time. She is shy as Cornelius and a Haitian translator fit her for a dress. But when Cornelius places a veil on her head and declares "belle," Etienne smiles. A few of the other brides joke, but most are somber. Outside, the grooms are just as serious while Cornelius' husband, Joe, sizes them for rings.

When a friend approached Cornelius in 2008 with the idea of bringing wedding gowns to northwest Haiti — gowns from the previous season that she could no longer market — Cornelius figured the weddings would be huge celebrations.

Then she met the brides and came to understand that in Haiti, marriages are not just cause for a party, rather a gateway to a better life. A woman who has been a member of a church choir for years but was never allowed to join them during service, once married, is allowed to sing. A middle-aged woman who has never been addressed by a title, once married, will answer to Madame.

Janeil Owen, executive director of Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, has observed the profound effect marriage can have on a Haitian's life. "It changes the way you walk, carry your head and interact," he says. Married Haitians often earn higher wages. Their children may even be treated better at school.

Since her first trip in March 2009, Cornelius has carted dresses from her shop to these group weddings every six months. She has dressed 109 brides. "To me, a wedding means joy, hope and a future," says Cornelius.

On this journey, she also has come to supply one woman with enough wedding dresses to launch a rental business, the first of many that Cornelius hopes to foster. Bridal shops are still rare in Haiti, and those that exist are in the bigger cities and are economically out of reach to many.

The second wedding takes place in La Presqu'ile, an impoverished fishing village on the northwest tip of Haiti. Cornelius fits Louisilia Magiste, 37, for a dress. Without Cornelius lending the cheap wedding dresses and footing the bill for wedding rings, marriage licenses and a reception, Magiste would not be able to afford to marry the father of her five children.

"When you are not married, it's like you are someone with a bad sign on you that says, 'Hey, this person is an outcast from society,'" Magiste says through a translator. "But when you are married, the sign is removed and everybody sees you as a complete person."

Many brides just have wear one wedding dress at their weddings, while some have a second dress for the reception. But Kim Zolciak, not unlike soon-to-be-divorced Kim Kardashian, wore not one but three different outfits on her wedding day.

We've already seen photos of the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star's two other wedding dresses, and Zolciak tweeted a photo of outfit No. 3 -- a lace jumpsuit -- on Friday.

"Love my 3rd wedding look!!" she wrote, adding that it was designed by Pnina Tornai. She also gave a shout-out to Kleinfeld Bridal.

According to Life & Style, Zolciak's three wedding outfits added up to roughly $92,000.

The reality star, who is headed for a Bravo spin-off show of her own married NFL player Kroy Biermann in a special ceremony Nov. 11. The couple welcomed son, Kroy Jagger Jr., in May.

Carolina Herrera Designs Wedding Gown for New ‘Twilight’ Film

When Stephanie Meyer, author of the wildly popular Twilight series of books, needed someone to design a wedding dress for the latest film adaptation, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I, she went to designer extraordinaire Carolina Herrera with the important task.

The wedding dress to be worn by the character Bella has been one of the most closely guarded film secrets and, according to Meyer, is the key ingredient to one of the franchise’s most celebrated moments.

Herrera was happy to take on the high-profil

e task of designing the ever-important gown, which will undoubtedly be raved about by millions upon millions of die-hard Twilight fans and fashion fans alike.

“I was called by Stephenie Meyer. We had to discuss a lot, but I was very inspired by her book and the description of the wedding,” Herrera said. “I was very flattered I was asked to do it; it’s a big scene for me.”

Herrera herself is a fan of the romance and ideas of true love conveyed in the Twilight series, and added that she was thrilled to be a part of such an important scene.

“Wedding dresses are different, because you have to know that it’s the most important day in the life of a woman,” she said. “You have to please the bride first of all, and it has to be a secret. I cannot talk about the cheap wedding dresses before the groom sees it.”

“I treated [Kristen Stewart's Bella] like every other bride, she added. “I think [Stewart] was very moved when she tried it on. And that means a lot, because she felt that it was the right one.”

As anticipation builds to an all-time high, Twilight and fashion fans will finally be able to see the highly anticipated gown tomorrow, Nov. 18, when The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I premieres in theaters nationwide.

It amazes me how easily we are duped into paying more than something is worth simply because of the way it’s packaged.

In this week’s Planet Money podcast from America’s National Public Radio, they discussed how retailers charge a premium for wedding dresses – and why people are willing to pay these inflated prices because anything cheaper would be “too cheap” for the occasion.

One retailer admitted, without flinching, that if that white wedding gown going many thousands of dollars did not have the word “wedding” in its name, its price would would be cheaper by not just hundreds, but perhaps thousands, of dollars.

This brings me very clumsily to multi-manager funds. The other week while moonlighting for FT Money I wrote about multi-manager funds and the fact that, on average, they tended to produce middling performance at a higher average cost than single-manager funds.

Now, it certainly is possible to invest in a very good multi-manager fund that outperforms the market and offers decent value for money. But so often this is not the case.

Like that expensive wedding dress, many investors pile into multi-manager funds because they think they’re getting something extra-special because of the marketing surrounding it. The promise of a diversified portfolio managed by the best minds in the industry is difficult to pass up.

Unfortunately many of these funds have total expense ratios of more than 2%, sometimes as high as 3%, acting as pure negative alpha from the word go.

These fees, as many experts say, create pure negative alpha, a hurdle for the manager to overcome before any returns are made. In North America this has been researched ad nauseam and the culture there is view fees as one of the biggest factors in bad fund performance. Yet this concept is only just starting to gain traction here in the UK.

Since the average multi-manager fund can’t even beat its peers, wealth managers and financial advisers are starting to shun them in favour of lower cost alternatives. And for good reason. If they can’t see any performance advantage in one of these funds in an era when lower growth is more susceptible to fee drag than ever before, why should they be considered acceptable for their clients?

While I’m hardly a passive investment advocate – my portfolio consists of investment trusts, a scattering of open ended funds and direct shares – I can see the argument for ETFs and tracker funds.

Unfortunately, it seems we’re still in a world where we’re easily suckered into paying a premium for smoke and mirrors. While some advisers have caught on to the ruse, the IMA’s sales figures for multi-manager funds shows that their popularity still hasn’t abated.

Why is Joan Rivers shopping for a cheap wedding dresses? Settle down, Joan won't be taking a trip down the aisle anytime soon. The comedian accompanied her sister's engaged daughter, Caroline, to Kleinfeld to find the perfect dress -- and Ms. "Fashion Police" herself invited us along for the day of comedy-tinged taffeta.

"That looks like a drunk ballerina," the fashion snob said as she marched around the store. "This, to me, is very exciting as I plan to upstage Caroline. I'd like the bridesmaids to look ugly. I don't want her to be a puffball, I want her to be the prettiest bride in the world. The most beautiful, fantasy, amazing gown -- that's why we are here and that's what we are going to come out with."

After surveying all of the ruffles and lace the store had to offer, Joan did some styling of her own.

"You have got to feel like you are the most magical creature alive that day, because then the reality will hit. We can give you the Snooki look," Joan says, puffing up Caroline's hair into a little bump. "And if we put a hole here [pointing to Caroline's privates], we can give her the Kardashian look."

So what type of man could get Joan into another wedding dress? "An old Jewish man with a cough!"

We're finally getting a glimpse of Beyonce's wedding -- three years after her star-studded wedding to Jay-Z!

It seems like impending motherhood has softened Beyonce's stance toward letting us in on her personal life. She hasn't kept her pregnancy a secret — and it seems like every person in her life has something to say about the maybe-baby girl.

We're getting even more in her new video for "I Was Here" — her cheap wedding dresses! Beyonce shows off the dress she wore when she married Jay-Z nearly three years ago in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip. The emotional song captures Queen B’s life since she started performing as a pre-teen.

"I wanna say I lived each day until I die," she sings in the song. It looks like she has, judging from the countless photos and video of her with everyone from South African leader Nelson Mandela to Michael Jackson and Barack Obama.

But back to the dress. The white strapless gown is pretty much exactly what we envisioned the pop princess wearing on her big day. She looked just as happy as we imagined, though.

 

Beyonce has featured wedding dresses a lot lately in her music videos. She played the part of a happy bride in the video for her recent song, "Best Thing I Never Had." She told Access Hollywood at the time that her own wedding was a lot less stressful than filming the fake one for the cameras.

"This may have been a little more crazy. I had to sing at the same time," she joked to the entertainment program.

"It was a little strange and definitely when I walked down the aisle, I'm like, 'This is kind of creepy. There's some other man standing here.' It was really beautiful and people were all really excited like it was my wedding. My mother was even like, 'Aww.' I’m like, 'Mom, it’s a video. This is not the real wedding.'" 

A word or two on wedding hues

In some European countries, it's not unusual to see red wedding dresses in hues from brick red, fire engine red to a deep burgundy. Red is a festive color and often associated with hearts and love, so it makes sense to wear it on your wedding day.

Blue might not be a color that you'd normally associate with wedding dresses, but it's been increasing in popularity in the last few years. Blue wedding gowns vary from sky blue to deep navy. If blue is your favorite color, consider making a bold statement and getting married in your favorite shade. 

Nothing could be further from the conventional pure, white wedding dress than a bodacious black gown. London-based designer David Fielden even went so far as to suggest that brides wear black while their bridesmaids wear white. It definitely takes things in a whole new direction.

Before brides go running out to buy black dresses, there is a word of caution. Years ago, Sarah Jessica Parker wore black when she married her husband, actor Matthew Broderick. In a 2006 interview with Marie Claire magazine, the Sex and the City star admits that she looks back and regrets not wearing a more traditional gown at her wedding. Weddings are incredibly special days, so while we encourage you to be different and wear what you please on your big day, do it because you love it and not because you want to go against the tide.

For brides who aren't thrilled with the idea of skipping the white gown altogether, there is another option. You can wear the traditional white cheap wedding dresses and still bestow a little color to your gown with a colored sash, bow, trim or hemline. Some bridal retailers, like David's Bridal and Alfred Angelo, offer wedding gowns with these types of colorful accents. With these dresses, you can liven up your look without being overwhelmed by too much color.

I think that's because when people think 'green clothing' they think hippie, and they don't see how to reconcile their desire for a stylish and elegant wedding dress with the image of a barefoot bride dressed in hemp.

There are many different ways to make a wedding dress choice that's eco-friendly. One of the greenest choices is a vintage or once-wed dress. There are a lot of excellent sources for finding a once-wed dress including your own family, and sites like Recycled Bride.

Other choices include choosing sustainable fabrics or fabrics and dresses that are locally created. If choosing eco-friendly clothing is important to you, you will need to do some research into your choices. Just because a dress has a natural or green feel, doesn't mean that it was created from sustainable fabrics or in an eco-friendly manner.

Katy Perry's wedding dresses details were finally released, and we have all the details. Did she don a traditional Indian outfit or something more fit for a pop princess?

The Teenage Dream singer wed Russell Brand in a dress by French design house Elie Saab Haute Couture. The dove-gray, floor-length stunner boasted sleeves and small embellishments.

All about the shoes

Perry chose two pairs of shoes for her wedding celebration, according to People Magazine. For the ceremony, Perry wore custom-made, one-of-a-kind beaded satin heels worth $7,000.

She then kicked off her heels after the vows and donned a pair of sparkly flat sandals for wedding reception dancing, according to insiders.

Indian essentials

Various gossip writers reported that Perry and Brand would don traditional Indian outfits for their ceremony. We now know that's not the case -- but the couple did incorporate a few Indian touches into the ceremony at the Aman-i-Khas resort in northern India.

The couple reportedly entered the ceremony on elephants and wore traditional henna tattoos on their hands. Perry also wore a nath, a traditional gold nose ring with a chain that stretched from her nose to her ear.

Off to the honeymoon

Just when we thought the wacky couple couldn't top their wedding, they jetted off to an exotic honeymoon. The couple was spotted boarding a plane for their honeymoon in the Maldives, according to reports.

Congratulations, you are getting married! In all the excitement and stress of planning your wedding over the next few months, one of the most important things you will purchase is your wedding gown. The first thing you should do before actually heading to the bridal shop is get an idea about which style of cheap wedding dresses you prefer. You will need to get familiar with wedding gown terminology and styles. Here are some general guidelines to help you get started on the road to wedding day bliss.

Silhouette

A-line

The A-line or princess dress has no marked waist and the vertical seams flow from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating a "A" shape. If you carry your weight in the middle, this silhouette is a nice choice.

Ball gown

These gowns normally quite formal, reminding you of Cinderella. The bodice is fitted with a very full skirt. Ball gowns can be long-sleeved, sleeveless or anywhere in between. The full skirt of a ball gown can hide large hips and thighs.

Empire

Empire gowns have a raised waistline that starts right under the bust, flowing to a skirt that skims over the hips then flairs slightly to the floor. This romantic silhouette is flattering to most body types and is particularly flattering to small breasted women.

Mermaid

As the name indicates, the mermaid dress (pictured above) is contoured against the body then the gown flows out beginning around the knees. This is the sexiest of the styles. If you confident in your body, a mermaid dress can show off your curves.

Sheath

The sheath or column dress has a slim shape that follows close to the line of the body. The straight design doesn't allow for many body flaws. The long lines of a sheath gown can elongate the look of your body. Therefore this type of dress can work well for short brides.

Length

• Street length - Hem falls just past the knee.

• Intermission (or Tea) length - Hem falls between the knees and ankle.

• Ballet length - Hem falls just to the ankles.

• Floor Length - Hem barely touches the floor on all sides.

Sleeves

• 3/4 sleeves - End between the elbow and wrist.

• Bell - Long sleeves, flare out toward the wrist creating a bell shape.

• Cap - Rounded sleeves, just covering shoulders.

• Fitted point - Long, fitted sleeves that come to a point over the hand.

• Juliet - Long, fitted sleeves with puffy shoulders.

• Long sleeves - Extend to the wrist and are normally form-fitting.

• Off-the-shoulder Sleeves - Cover the upper part of the arm but leave the tops of shoulders exposed.

• Poet - Long sleeves, fitted to the elbow then flared.

• Pouf - Short sleeves, gathered to create a puffy look.

• Short sleeves - About the length of T-shirt sleeves.

• Sleeveless - Strapless with no sleeves.

• Spaghetti  - Thin spaghetti straps with no sleeves.

Neckline

• Bateau - Close to straight across from the tip of the shoulder. Gives plenty of coverage.

• Halter - Wraps around the back of the neck to create deep armholes. Often also a backless style, which is very sexy.

• High - Covers most of the neck. Creates a formal, somewhat stiff look.

• Jewel - Similar to that of a T-shirt. Creates a bustier look.

• Off-The-Shoulder - As the name indicates, the top of the shoulders are bare. Showcases your collarbone and shoulders.

• Portrait - A very wide scoop from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.

• Scoop - Classic U-shaped neckline. Can be cut low for a sexier look.

• Square - Squared neckline, often associated with empire gowns.

• Strapless - Normally straight across. Not recommended for women with small busts.

• Sweetheart - Shaped like the top half of a heart. Emphasizes the cleavage.

• V-Neck - Dips in the front into a V-shape. Can be very deep.

 

Bodice

The bodice refers to the portion of the dress between the neckline and skirt.

• Corset - A form fitting bodice with boning and lace-up closures.

• Halter - Sleeveless bodice that wraps around you neck, normally backless.

• Midriff - Fits very closely around the mid-section, accentuating your waist.

• Surplice - Sections of fabric cross wrap in the front or back.

• Tank - Sleeveless with wide armholes like tank top.

Train

• Sweep - 8" to 12" in length, just a few inches longer than the gown.

• Court - Extends about 3 feet from the waist.

• Chapel - Extends about 4 feet from the waist.

• Cathedral - Extends about 6 to 9 feet from the waist.

MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA)  --  Twenty-seven-year-old Desiree Timmons wants the same thing that all brides want in a wedding dresses:  "I want something that makes me look beautiful."  But the world of wedding gowns is foreign territory for a bride-to-be that spends her days as a lieutenant in the Navy.

"I'm a surface warfare officer.  We are the ones that drive the ships out there on the seas," said Timmons.   

Her fiance of four months is now serving in Afghanistan.  

"We actually met when I was stationed down in Guantanamo Bay," said Timmons.

Timmons' fiance first told her about Brides Across America.  It's an organization that teams up with bridal boutiques across the country to give away wedding gowns to military brides.

"It's nice to know that there are still people out there who not only care, but want to show that they appreciate what we are doing and how we are serving for our country," said Timmons.

The only place in the D.C.-area that's part of the program is Jeanette's Bride 'N Boutique in Manassas.

"It's a very good experience.  It puts a smile on their faces.  A free dress?!  Who doesn't want a free dress?" said Maria Epperson, an employee at Jeanette's Bride 'N Boutique.   

Over the next two days, Jeanette's Bride 'N Boutique will give away fifty wedding dresses.  They range in price from $500 to $3,000.  Timmons walked away with one that cost around $1,500.    

"I am just really happy.  I can't believe I found something," said Timmons.

Zoe Davies, 33, of Sunbury, Surrey, was in a size 24 dress and weighed 22st 3lb when she first walked up the aisle with her fiancPete in 2000. But the memories from that day left her so ashamed that she went on a diet and then convincedher 36-year-old husband to tie the knotagain.

'Every girl wants to look like a princesson their wedding day. But I looked hideousin those photos,' she told the Sunday Mirror. 'If you compare the pictures it's like Pete has married somebody else. Everyone kept asking what Pete had done with Zoe! Finally I had the wedding I'd dreamed about.'

Mrs Davies is only 5ft 4ins and met her future husband Pete while he worked as a fitterand she worked in a bakery. At the time she was 10st but by their first wedding in 2000 her poor diet meant she had balloonedand doubled her weight and dress size.

While at her heaviest, she typically skipped breakfast before eating bacon sandwiches, crisps and chocolate for lunch, a Chinese takeaway for dinner and snacking on sweets, more chocolate and crisps.

But after realizing she had to change her unhealthy ways, she ditchedher high fat diet in favor of cereal, fresh fruit and salads and started exercising.

Her efforts paid offand she dropped to11 stone and dress size 12. Her new slimmer figure filled her with confidence so the mother-of-two asked Pete to marry her again so she could have a wedding album she could be proud of. He agreed and the couple tied the knot again in front of 100 friends and loved-ones in August.

When Eva Amurri began planning her Charleston wedding to Kyle Martino, the pieces all fell effortlessly into place — every piece but her dress, that is.

She tried on numerous white gowns, but “they didn’t feel like me,” she told PEOPLE in September. “I just felt like my head was stuck on a different girl’s body.” But after some tireless Internet searching, Amurri believed she’d finally found her dream dress. “I just fell in love with it,” she said.

The bride asked designer Lela Rose to create a breathtaking look for her big day, using the satin-faced silk “The Woods” gown with three-dimensional lace yolk and low back as her base. For a personal touch, Amurri and Martino’s wedding date was embroidered in the lining in pale blue, for the bride’s ‘something blue.’

Amurri commissioned Rose to make mom Susan Sarandon’s mother-of-the-bride dress, too; she produced a silk faille sheath that also featured a three-dimensional lace neckline. “Eva loved the idea of them sharing a design detail,” Rose tells PEOPLE. “The three-dimensional lace seemed so fitting for both and gave a nod to their close relationship.”

Though all eyes were on the bride — who paired her dress with kitten heels she found online for $80 — the groom had his own dapper getup, as well. “Kyle’s tux is gorgeous,” Amurri adds. “Brioni made it especially for him.”

But nothing could compare to seeing Amurri walk down the aisle in her custom gown. “Working with Eva and Susan was an honor. I was well aware of their talent and beauty but their incredible graciousness made the experience one I will not soon forget,” Rose shares. “And when Eva put on the gown, of course she was stunning but you could immediately see how comfortable she was. She felt like the most beautiful version of her everyday self. Once we made a few tweaks, the gown was undeniably her.”

“I love my wedding dress,” adds Amurri. “It was just perfect for me, and already feels like it would be hanging in my closet. I loved it from the moment I tried it on.”

An armed Croydon looter has been jailed for more than four years

An armed looter seen carrying stolen wedding dresses  through Croydon town centre during the August riots has been sentenced to more than four years behind bars.

Jake Jones, of Balfour Road, South Norwood, pleaded guilty to non-residential burglary, violent disorder, handling stolen goods and possession of a bladed article in a public place when he appeared at Inner London Crown Court on October 21.

Jones, 20, was recorded on CCTV rioting in Centrale Shopping Centre, Croydon on August 8, targeting shops such as House of Fraser and Orange, and attempting to burgle Jane Norman.

Other CCTV footage showed Jones carrying a number of stolen wedding dresses, which police later recovered.

Jones handed himself in at Croydon police station on August 22 and was charged later that day.

He was sentenced to four years three months at a young offender’s institute.

Acting Detective Sergeant Vicky Courtnell from Croydon CID, said: “He used violence and behaved in a despicable way, causing serious damage to a lot of shops in the process. This sentence is good news and a violent offender will be spending a considerable amount of time behind bars.”
