Tricky question: An audience member and her fiancé sparked the debate during a Q&A session

But, as Mr de la Renta, explained, there was good reason for his controversial suggestion.

More often than not, he said, a mother's taste is at odds with her daughter's and her nostalgia for her own wedding day can often get in the way of choosing the right gown.

'What your mother has to understand is that this is the most important day of your life, that this is something you have been dreaming, thinking of for a long time,' he said.

'It’s not her day, it is your day, and your mother should be very proud.'

Once explained, Ms Miller was more inclined to agree with her fellow panellist.

'I think it’s a personal decision,' she conceded.  'It depends on your relationship, what you think of your mother’s fashion taste.'

In any case, she added: 'Don’t take too many people.'
